Here’s a quick, ready-to-run ruleset for an 8‑player friendly billiards tournament.

Format

  - 8 players, single-elimination bracket (Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Final).

  - Optional: a simple consolation mini-bracket for first-round losers if time allows.

  - Seeding by random draw at check-in.

Game

  - 8-ball, using simplified WPA/BCA-style rules.

  - Race to 4 racks for all matches; Final is race to 5.

Break and racking

  - Lag for the first break; then alternate breaks.

  - Standard triangle rack: 8-ball centered; back corners one solid and one stripe; other balls random.

  - Legal break: at least one ball pocketed or 4 balls to a rail.

  - 8 on the break is a win; scratch on an 8-on-the-break is a loss.

  - After the break, the table is open until a called, legally pocketed shot assigns solids/stripes.

Calling and shot rules

  - Call the pocket on the 8-ball; all other balls are

  - Combinations are allowed; contacting the opponent’s group first is a foul unless the table is still open.

  - Jump shots are allowed with proper technique; no scooping. Gentle masse allowed; avoid damaging the cloth.

Fouls and penalties

  - Ball in hand anywhere on the table for all fouls.

  - Common fouls: scratch; failure to hit your own group first (once groups are chosen); no rail after contact; double-hit/push; any ball off the table; moving balls with the cue or body (opponent chooses to leave as is or restore if both agree).

  - Loss of rack: pocketing the 8-ball early; 8-ball off the table; pocketing the 8-ball on the same stroke as a foul; pocketing the 8 in a pocket other than the one called.

Conduct and pace

  - One 2-minute timeout per player per match.

  - Aim for a 45-second average shot pace; avoid stalling or excessive consultation.

  - No coaching during a rack; between racks is fine if it doesn’t delay play.

  - Sportsmanship required: no sharking, loud distractions, or hovering over shots.

Disputes and refereeing

  - Self-referee in good faith. For close hits, ask a neutral watcher before the shot.

  - The host/tournament director’s decision is final on disputes.

Equipment and table rules

  - House rules on cue tip condition and chalk; keep the table area clear.

  - If a table defect affects a shot, replay the shot by mutual agreement or consult the director.

Timing and forfeits

  - 10-minute grace period for your first match. After that, 1 rack forfeited every 5 minutes late, up to match forfeit.

Prize

  - Winner takes $500 USD / ฿15,000. Split possible (e.g., 1st $350 / ฿10,500 and 2nd $150 / ฿4,500), will be confirmed before play begins.
